ABe 4/4 I

Version 2.0

The the 1910s BCe4 Electric Motors of the Bernina Bahn

The set contains a total of three motors, representing the livery worn by the type in the timeframe from 1908 until ca. 1920:
- Motors 4 and 10: The two electric motors are part of the Bernina Railroad's original order of 14 passenger motor cars with four axles, built by SIG Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft in Neu¬hausen (mechanical parts) and Alioth in Berlin (electrical parts). The motors offer a combined 2nd and 3rd class seating, resulting in their designation being BCe4.

- Motor 23: To cope with demand and the year-round operations, a follow up order for three motor-combines was placed. Designated BCFe4 21-23, these motors offering 2nd and 3rd class seating as well as a central luggage compartment were delivered in 1910.

The 1950s Abe 4/4I Electric Motors of the RhB Bernina Pass

The set contains a total of nine motors, representing distinct liveries worn by the type in the timeframe from 1943 until ca 1975:
- Motors 3, 7 and 23: Come in dark green RhB colors with block style lettering.
- Motor 6: This car comes in the patched livery applied immediately after the merger between Bernina Bahn and Rh.B, which actually means that the car wears the simplified livery in solid yellow that Bernina Bahn applied from the 1920s onwards, with only the lettering of the operator changed from Bernina Bahn to Rh.B.
- Motors 8, 15 as well as Motor/Combines 21 and 22: Come in dark green & cream, with block style lettering.

The 1960s Abe 4/4I Electric Motors of the RhB Bernina Pass

The set contains a total of five motors, representing distinct liveries worn by the type in the timeframe from 1943 until ca 1975:
- Motor 30: Comes in dark green and cream, with block style lettering. The green & cream livery was used on a trial basis on various pieces of RhB equipment from ca. 1951 onwards, among them also Bernina motors 31, 33 and 34. Later on, the RhB reverted to all green colors with trim line in gold for passenger carriages, while passenger motors were painted red with trim line in gold (see motors 31 & 32).

- Motor 33: Comes in dark green RhB colors with block style lettering. This is the initial livery applied by RhB in the 1940s, just after the merger.

- Motors 34, 37 and 38: Come in red RhB colors with block style lettering of the logo, and single trim line in gold, a livery in use from the 1960s to ca. 1980. Motor 38 is the only motor of this type that retained its baggage compartment to the present day, which makes it actually an ABDe 4/4I.

The 1990s Abe 4/4I Electric Motors of the RhB Bernina Pass

The set contains a total of six motors, representing distinct liveries worn by the type in the timeframe from 1975 until today:
- Motors 30 and 34: Come in the bright yellow Bernina Bahn colors which the RhB applied to this car in 2001 (34) and 2002 (30) when they were externally restored as heritage cars. During the peak season, cars 30&34 can almost daily be seen working the Pass, usually paired together.
- Motor 31: Comes in red RhB colors with modern day RhB logo, and trim line in gold, a livery in use between ca. 1975 and 1985.

- Motors 32 and 35: Comes in red colors with modern day RhB logo and bold “Rhetian Railway” lettering in Italian and German, which is the current livery of the RhB. It was introduced in the early 1990s and represents the current state of these two motors.

- Motor 38: Comes in the red RhB colors with modern day RhB logo, and trim line in gold (similar to No. 31). No. 38 was the only one of the three cars delivered to BB in 1910 with baggage compartment that retained this compartment for its entire career. While the other two cars were converted to ABe 4/4Is, number 38 remained the sole ABDe 4/4 on Bernina pass. In the 1980s, RhB de-classified its 1st class section to 2nd class – albeit without removing the comfortable chairs. From this moment on, the car was re-designed to BDe 4/4I 38. It remained in service as such until its conversion to MoW motor Xe 4/4 9922.
